What Boarding a Weekend Bahamas Cruise Is Really Like
When you board a Bahamas Cruise for a weekend trip, you will still go through the normal check in process of dropping bags, going through security, checking boarding passes and travel documents (don’t forget your passport!), walking onto the ship, and waiting for your stateroom (and luggage) to be ready. Once onboard, the ship is alive with energy! There are shops and restaurants, people exploring all parts of the ship, live music, and more to explore right away. We boarded, checked out muster station (safety station) to check the safety briefing off the list, then continued walking around and grabbed some lunch while we waited for the notification that our stateroom was ready!
First Impressions of Utopia of the Seas

I have been on many cruises in the past, but this was my first one in years and my first impression was simply “WOW!!!” Utopia really does have that wow factor that you may not see on some other ships.
The Utopia of the Seas is a part of Royal Caribbean’s Icon class, which are some of the largest ships in the world, and this ship is Royal’s best weekend cruise to the Bahamas!
When we cruised aboard the Utopia of the Seas, it was the world’s second largest cruise ship in the world (since then, the Star of the Seas has began sailing so Utopia has dropped into third largest behind the Star and the Icon). The ship is massive, with many different areas around the ship, from the Boardwalk to Central Park, the Royal Promenade and more. The schedule is packed full of entertainment, shows, and activities, and there is something for everyone.

Staterooms on Utopia of the Seas: What to Expect on a Short Cruise
Once our staterooms were ready, our luggage was delivered in front of our doors and our key cards were ready for us. We had a balcony room, which was a great size for two people. The bathroom had plenty of storage and room to get ready, the shower was well sized (unlike some cruise showers that can be tight). We had two single beds that can be converted to a king if sharing a bed. We both had a decent sized closet right next to the bed, we had a vanity and sitting area with a couch, a mini fridge, and the balcony had two chairs each with their own little ottoman to prop your feet up on. The beds and pillows were comfortable and our room steward was there for us anytime we needed anything!

Entertainment on a Weekend Cruise: Shows, Music & Nightlife
If live entertainment is one of your favorites to experience on a cruise, then the Utopia is a great cruise to take. With live entertainment of all sorts, at every hour of the day, you’re bound to find a show or activity that you love.
We made an effort to go see as many shows as possible and they were all amazing! From professional performers like their Aqua Show, ice skating show, live music, comedians, and professional dancers, the mainstage shows bring a level of performance that is incredible.

If you like more casual entertainment, check out some of the guest-interactive shows like the Battle of the Sexes, Karaoke, one of their many pool parties or dance parties! We enjoyed a “one hit wonders” party on the promenade one night, and it was so much fun singing and dancing along with the entertainment team. There is also live music throughout the cruise at different times like a Caribbean band around the pools, piano bar, rock bands, and more.

Ports of Call on a Weekend Bahamas Cruise

The primary ports of call for the Utopia of the Seas surround their weekend getaways. You will board in Port Canaveral, Florida which is just outside of Orlando. From there, most of their weekend sailings go to Nassau and Coco Cay in the Bahamas. There are other itineraries such as a 7 day trip offered sailing to islands in the Caribbean such as St. Thomas, but the ship’s primary itinerary is the 4 day Bahamas weekend trip.

Food & Dining on Utopia of the Seas
One of my favorite perks of cruising is the plethora of dining options on board, even just in the buffets and main dining room! From the large buffets to the adults-only Solarium Bistro, main dining room to specialty dining, and even grab-and-go options, there’s no shortage of food and dining aboard.

The main dining room is available for a more traditional cruise dining experience (a reserved time each night, at the same table, with the same group of people), or “My Time” dining, which is available at any time you choose, but may not be at the same table or with the same people. These can be reserved through the app and for the most part, is included in your cruise fare.

The buffets and most grab-and-go restaurants are on a “come as you please” schedule and include options like pizza, tacos, soft serve, or a variety of options for all meals at the buffets. These options are included with your cruise fare and you can try as many items as you would like.

Specialty dining is generally an additional charge, but the variety of options aboard Utopia are really amazing. From hibachi to upscale dining, Southern cuisine and grab-and-go sushi, sports bars to themed dining, these restaurants generally recommend a reservation and are mostly available for dinner only unless during a sea day. The specialty dining options aboard Utopia are a great way to elevate your cruise, especially if you are a foodie!
Excursions on a Short Bahamas Cruise: What’s Worth It?
There are a plethora of excursions on the Utopia of the seas, but keep in mind that you typically have 8 or so hours in port. Since Utopia is such a large ship, we docked at the far end of the cruise pier, which can take around 30 minutes to walk to. Other than Coco Cay (Royal Caribbean’s private island), you will likely stop at Nassau, Bahamas. Nassau is a great cruise port if you know what to book!

In Nassau, one of my top recommendations would be to grab an island tour via taxi. We took a tour with “Uncle Jake”, who was a wonderful tour guide and drove us to some of Nassau’s more popular spots, hidden gems, and provided so much information about the island. Since we were a relatively large group, we were able to customize the places we wanted to go, but Uncle Jake had great recommendations all day that made it nice to sit back and relax with his guidance.

Another popular excursion in Nassau is booking a day pass at Atlantis Resort. This is a great option for families or people that want to enjoy a variety of resort activities, explore a beautiful aquarium, or enjoy a water park. Without a day pass, you can enjoy the casino, shopping, and walking around some of the grounds of the resort, which is a nice alternative if you want to explore some of the resort but still want to enjoy the public beaches. Many other resorts offer day passes as well, so choose the one that fits your vibe!

A great more low-key option for cruisers is finding the perfect white sandy beach to enjoy during your cruise stop. Whether you prefer a resort lined beach, one with local vendors, popping over to Jaws Beach, or asking your guide for their favorite beach recommendations, Nassau is full of gorgeous white-sand, turqoise water beaches to enjoy!
If you want to hit some of those bucket list Bahamas activities like the famous pigs in the Exumas, a private boat charter is a great option, just be sure to check the tour times and amount of time that the ship is docked!
Pools & Outdoor Spaces on a Weekend Cruise
Utopia of the Seas is filled with outdoor activities and places to cool off in the hot sun. There are 5 pools, many hot tubs, water slides, and even a flowrider in the sports area! There is lots of seating around the pool decks, and even in areas away from the pools you can find a nice lounger or seating area to watch the sea as it goes by. There are sun decks, splash pads, a beach pool, adults-only area (more about that below), and you’re bound to find the perfect spot to hang out no matter what vibe you’re going for.

Other than pools and relaxing areas, the sports zone is filled with activities like mini golf, rock climbing, the Flowrider (surf “pool”), and activities scheduled throughout the day. So even if you’d rather hang on the ship than go ashore, there is plenty to do and enjoy in the sunshine on the ship!
Quieter Spaces and Adults-Only Areas on Utopia of the Seas
If you’re traveling without kids or even need an escape from the families while your kids are hanging out a the kid’s clubs, there are plenty of places to escape and enjoy some adults-only cruising. The Solarium is the Utopia’s exclusive area for adults only, with pools, daybeds, loungers, a bistro, and bar. It’s at the front of the boat and is enclosed, making it the perfect peaceful escape.

Other than the Solarium, Royal Caribbean hosts many adults-only activities around the ship including shows, comedy, workshops, shopping, and more. You can enjoy the casino find some quiet in the art galleries. On their themed night, they also have an adults-only party, our themed night was Toga night and we were given sheets to tie into togas from Royal, and got to celebrate our last night with a silent disco! We were traveling as a group of all adults and it was very easy to find adults-only areas to hang out!
Who a Weekend Bahamas Cruise on Utopia of the Seas Is Best For
Utopia is a great weekend cruise for a variety of different travelers. Whether you want to try cruises for the first time, or just need a weekend escape, the Utopia of the Seas is a great weekend cruise to enjoy. It’s a great way to get acquainted with cruises if you are hesitant about a longer trip and want to see if you even enjoy cruises since it is a shorter trip in relatively calm seas.

For the more frequent cruisers, this is a great addition to your cruise trips to help you get away between longer cruise itineraries. This ship is filled with entertainment and is a great option for Floridians looking for a different weekend getaway as well!
Utopia is a great ship for all kinds of travelers, whether a group of friends, a family getaway, couple’s trip, or even solo travel, there really is something for everyone onboard.
Is a Weekend Cruise Long Enough?
A weekend on Utopia of the Seas flies by with all the entertainment, activities, and two ports. It can feel a little rushed if you are used to longer week-long or more cruise itineraries, but it is a great getaway to fill that cruise itch. The trip aboard Utopia was a blast, and it definitely got me interested in cruising again after not having been onboard a ship in many years.
